The Debt of the Nation

Is consumer debt a primary cause of the recession? Will the debt burden on Irish households hold back the recovery? These issues are explored in this presentation to the Irish Banking Federation Debt Management Seminar held today:

Driven From Drink

The recent Drinks Industry Group of Ireland report tells a sad story about the industry and its prospects. Consumption levels are now back to those last seen in the early to mid-1990s: a trend in line with retail sales as noted in a previous post.

This chart summarises the key trends:

For What It's Worth

We thought this was interesting: you can now bid for U2 tickets on the Ticketmaster website. In today's deflationary environment, this might be the best way of ensuring that sellers get the best price. The Value Challenge

To coincide with International Consumer Day, the National Consumer Agency has launched a new service called ConsumerValue. To coincide with the launch, the NCA commissioned Amárach Research to conduct a survey of Irish consumers that examined the impact of the recession on their spending habits and intentions. The research is presented below - you can download the powerpoint version of the presentation from the NCA website:

What Am I Bid for these Savings?

We do a lot of work in Amárach trying to understand the drivers of consumer decision making, including financial services. So it isn't surprising when you learn that things like interest rates are a big influence on decisions by savers as to where they put their savings and so on. Fairly obvious stuff.

But once in a while you come across an idea that takes the fairly obvious and turns it on its head. Like the service provided by Spaarbod in the Netherlands, whereby you register with them, tell them how much you have as savings and they then get the banks to bid for your savings.

Why stop there? "What am I bid for this family's entire grocery spending for the next year?" We live in interesting times.

Serious Business

We do a lot of research for clients with small businesses: the backbone of Ireland's (and most everywhere else's) economy. In these difficult times its good to see the burgeoning number of online resources dedicated to helping small businesses - outside of Ireland mostly, but still very relevant.

Take the Small Business Marketing Guide - we reckon it's one of the best: and well worth subscribing to their RSS feed (if you're not sure what that is, just ask your children/nieces/nephews ...)
